“Everything I want from an accountant”: that’s the verdict on Gareth Hughes & Co from Phil Arundale. |
Phil is the latest of several generations of his family to supply local shoppers with fruit, vegetables, fresh fish and game at the long-established Colwyn Bay business Arundales.
Arundales was founded in 1887 and originally started life selling fish and game, adding fruit and vegetables some 50 years ago. Today Phil and wife Wende have branched out to offer fresh produce boxes, with a focus on seasonal availability, and a delivery service for customer orders
The firm’s ability to diversify and develop over the years is one of the reasons why the business continues to hold its own as one of the few remaining greengrocers and fishmongers on the North Wales coast. That willingness to change has also extended to its accountant, resulting in a successful working relationship with Gareth Hughes & Co.
Phil, who took over the day-to-day running of the business from his father around 20 years ago, had been with the same accountant for many years but had been feeling for some time that the business could benefit from a fresh approach.
He had already switched to another provider when he met Gareth Hughes at a social event in 2004. Phil recalls: “He made it clear that he was not looking for business but he knew the firm I had gone to and advised me that there might be problems.”
When that advice turned out to be correct, Phil had no hesitation in going to Gareth Hughes & Co and has not looked back since. Everyday financial matters and payroll for Phil, Wende and their four staff are dealt with in-house, while Gareth Hughes & Co handles the annual accounts and tax returns.
Gareth is also on hand to deal with any queries and when Phil and Wende renovated an old house recently and needed to raise funding for the project, his advice was valuable in finding a tax-efficient way to do so.
Phil says: “Everything is dealt with very efficiently and I have everything I want from an accountant, although Gareth is more than that – he has become a friend too.
“His honesty is one of the reasons I like working with him. I recently recommended someone to him but when he went to see Gareth, Gareth told him that he was getting a good service from his current accountant and there was no reason to change. I suspect some people would have been happy to acquire another client, but that’s not the way Gareth does things.”
