Defining dyslexia is simple - difficulty in reading, writing and spelling correctly, according to the dictionary - but it is a complex condition that is likely to have a lifelong impact on anyone that it affects. |
For thousands of children diagnosed with dyslexia, the innovative work of Xavier Educational Software, based in the School of Pyschology at the University of Wales, Bangor, has played an important part in their education.
The company was established in 1987, to develop software programmes complementing a book-based learning system created within the Dyslexia Unit. For a substantial part of the time since then, Gareth Hughes & Co have provided its accountancy support.
David Lane, who runs the business with Glyn Royds, explains: “We first met Gareth Hughes about 15 years ago, when he was working for another firm that looked after our accounts. When he set up his own business, we decided to move with him – we had met him, we liked him and the accountancy services he provided were good.”
Xavier Educational Software’s in-house finances are taken care of by David while Gareth Hughes & Co, where David and Glyn also liaise with Gareth’s co-director, Marcus Wilkes, deal with the company’s annual accounts and is on hand to advise on any financial matters that crop up during the year.
David says: “If there’s anything I need to know, I’ll get in touch, usually by sending an email. Gareth Hughes & Co also keep us up to date on issues that could affect us, such as business tax changes.”
When Xavier Educational Software began more than 20 years ago, the company was a pioneer in its field. Since then, competition has increased and the firm operates in a challenging marketplace, while continuing to deliver exciting products, including software in which the user can trigger events, such as musical instruments starting to play, by waving at on-screen “hot spots”.
David says: “Although we may not be driving around in Porsches, what is more rewarding is knowing that our programmes are in use and helping dyslexic children.”
And it’s also good to know that Gareth Hughes & Co are there to provide reliable, professional support. David sums up: “It’s an easy, friendly relationship, which has always worked very well.”
