Budget date set for 24 March
The Chancellor, Alistair Darling, will present his budget speech on Wednesday, 24 March, the government has announced.
This will be the last budget of the current parliament, as a General Election must take place by June, but is widely expected to be called to coincide with local elections on May 6.
