Apprenticeship Minimum Earnings Set to Rise
Llandudno Junction based chartered accountants Gareth Hughes & Co are informing individuals of an increase in the minimum earnings received by apprentices, due to take effect in August 2009. The minimum weekly earnings are currently £80 per week, but are due to rise to £95 per week.
A government review of apprentice earnings has revealed that, on average, the net earnings of an apprentice are £170 per week. However, a number of apprentices working in low-paid industries earn much less than this.
Marcus Wilkes comments: “Apprentices are exempt from the National Minimum Wage, and so it is important that there is an equitable minimum standard of pay. Overall apprenticeship pay is not an issue, but for many people, especially young women in sectors such as hairdressing and social care, this increase will be noticeably beneficial.”
It is estimated that this move will benefit some 26,000 apprentices.
